So, where to begin? I should probably start off giving props to the Largehearted Boy for bringing Zak Sally to my attention. Since this Rock & Roll June and I’m trying to give the 6 questions a Rock & Roll, he suggested Zak. Which was a weird bit of cosmic timing because that very night, I was reading Little Things and there was Zak Sally in the pages of that graphic memoir. That my friends, is kismet. So the name Zak Sally might ring a bell because he was the bassist for Low or maybe you know him from his comic work like Recidivist or maybe you know him as the man behind La Mano 21 an indie comics publisher. Wow. Right? And if that’s not enough, Zak also did the illustrations for Brian Evenson’s upcoming (July 1) short story collection Fugue State which is being by local publishers Coffee House Press.
What book(s) are you currently reading?
well, i’m somehow RE-reading Master and Commander, the first book in Patrick O’Brian’s incredibly huge (20 volumes) and astounding Aubrey/ Maturin epic. i read the entire series once already (during a period of my life where i had time to read extensively– i.e stuck in a van all day every day with a touring band for many months), and am desperately trying to not get fully sucked in again– there’s so many other books that i HAVEN’T yet read, i can’t justify reading the whole thing again.
but… damn, they are so good. O’Brian’s incredible research and love of the subject– not to mention the fact that he’s just a great storyteller– makes them pretty irresistible.
however, i will resist.
Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character? Who?
Maggie and Hopey from Love and Rockets. HUGE crushes back in my impressionable youth (and which one i had a crush on at any given time is lost to me now), but now i’m realizing that i’ve “known” those fictional characters as long as i’ve known anyone outside my immediate family. that’s a LONG friendship, fictional or not . . .
If your favorite author came to Minnesota, who would it be and what bar would you take him/her to?
i’m lucky enough to say that that has actually HAPPENED a couple times; recently Maggie and Hopey’s papa, Jaime Hernandez came to town and i got to hang out with him for the day. it’s also happened with Kim Deitch, Brian Evenson, and a few others (as i said, i’m a LUCKY GUY).
as far as a bar, i dunno; i quit drinking some years back, so. . . probably near beers at someplace real quiet.
What was your first favorite book?
Look out For Pirates. they had it at the UMD library. it had a shark in it. they also had a Tarzan book (in comics form, naturally. . .) that i was obsessed with.
Let’s say Fahrenheit 451 comes to life, which book would you become in order to save it from annihilation?
The Rise and Fall Of The Third Reich by William Shirer.
What is one book you haven’t read but want to read before you die?
i’m gonna cheat here; my mom has the ENTIRE The Story Of Civilization series by Will (and later joined by his wife Ariel) Durant. i’ve begun the first volume a couple times, and it seems like a great read…there’s a part of me that almost feels CRIMINAL for knowing so little about history and the “Big Picture.” someday i’d love to dig in and read all of these.
Sarah Stonich got me good. I had no idea her book Vacationland was...
